Review HICKOK Vintage Oscillograph

The Hickok RFO-4 Oscilloscope is an essential tool for electronics technicians, engineers, and hobbyists seeking to investigate and analyze various electrical signals. This versatile and powerful oscilloscope from Hickok Instruments is designed to provide accurate, high-resolution measurements and waveform displays.

The RFO-4 features a dual-trace capability, allowing users to compare and contrast two signals simultaneously on the same screen. The instrument supports both DC and AC voltages, with a maximum input voltage of 20Vrms and a maximum input current of 10mA. This makes it suitable for measuring a wide range of electrical signals, from DC power supplies to high-frequency AC signals.

The oscilloscope boasts a high-resolution, 2,000-segment memory depth, enabling users to capture and review complex waveforms in detail. The display is a high-contrast, 3.5-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels, ensuring clear and easy-to-read trace information. The display also offers several useful features, such as automatic and manual gain control, cursors for measurement and markers for labeling points on the waveform.

The RFO-4 is equipped with a built-in function generator, which can output sine, square, triangle, and pulse waveforms. The function generator can be used to generate test signals for various applications, such as troubleshooting electronic circuits or verifying the performance of active components.

The oscilloscope also includes several built-in test signals, including a self-test signal and a 1kHz sine wave for calibration purposes. Additionally, the RFO-4 offers a built-in frequency counter, which can be used to measure the frequency of signals with a frequency range of up to 50MHz.

The Hickok RFO-4 Oscilloscope is compact and portable, with dimensions of 11.2 x 7.9 x 3.2 inches and a weight of just over 2 pounds. It is powered by four AA batteries or an optional AC adapter and comes with a soft carry case for easy transportation. The oscilloscope also includes a range of probes and accessories, such as test leads, BNC adapters, and a power adapter, making it a complete solution for measuring and analyzing electrical signals on the go.

Overall, the Hickok RFO-4 Oscilloscope is a versatile and powerful tool for electronics technicians, engineers, and hobbyists. Its dual-trace capability, high-resolution display, built-in function generator, and various measurement features make it an indispensable tool for investigating and analyzing electrical signals in the lab or in the field.

The Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope is a vintage test instrument that was produced between the late 1940s and the early 1960s. It is known for its robust construction, high performance, and unique features that set it apart from modern oscilloscopes. Here are some pros and cons of buying an Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope:

Pros:

1. High Performance: The Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope offers a bandwidth of up to 30 MHz, which was impressive for its time. It also has a high sensitivity of 2 V/div and a high input impedance of 1 M .

2. Rugged Construction: The RFO-4 is built like a tank, with a heavy-duty metal case and high-quality components. It is designed to withstand harsh industrial environments and can still function reliably after decades of use.

3. Unique Features: The RFO-4 has several unique features that are not found in modern oscilloscopes, such as a built-in function generator, a frequency counter, and a built-in noise generator. These features can be useful for troubleshooting and testing electronic circuits.

4. Educational Value: Owning an Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope can be an excellent learning experience for electronics enthusiasts and students. It provides a glimpse into the history of test equipment and offers a hands-on experience with vintage technology.

Cons:

1. Limited Functionality: Compared to modern oscilloscopes, the RFO-4 has limited functionality. It does not have features such as automatic triggering, real-time sampling, or digital storage.

2. Maintenance and Calibration: The RFO-4 requires regular maintenance and calibration to ensure accurate readings. This can be time-consuming and expensive, especially for those without the necessary expertise.

3. Compatibility: The RFO-4 uses obsolete connectors and test leads, which can be difficult to find or replace. It may also require specialized adapters to interface with modern test equipment.

4. Power Consumption: The RFO-4 consumes more power than modern oscilloscopes, which can be a concern for those with limited power budgets.

Conclusion:

The Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope is a unique and valuable piece of electronics history. It offers high performance, rugged construction, and several unique features that are not found in modern oscilloscopes. However, it also has limitations in terms of functionality, maintenance requirements, compatibility, and power consumption.

Recommendation:

If you are an electronics enthusiast or a collector of vintage test equipment, the Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope is definitely worth considering. However, it may not be the best choice for professional use or for those who require the latest features and functionality. Instead, modern oscilloscopes with digital storage and advanced features may be a better option for these applications. Ultimately, the decision to buy an Hickok RFO-4 oscilloscope depends on your individual needs, budget, and interest in vintage technology.

Details:

I have no idea if can power this up. All the buttons on front of it. You are acknowledging that its being sold for parts as is. When you purchase it.

Most of the wires are covered in some sort leather coating and that's brittle. Just look at the pictures. I know these are highly sought after and very hard to find. The vintage Hickok oscillograph RFO-4 is an analog oscilloscope made by the reputable brand.

The condition is hard and absolute for parts only situation. I literally know nothing about this thing. The main bulb is intact and its hooked up to the wiring everything. I can't tell if its burnt out or what not.

The front face plate is in decent shape with some dirt and everything. You can still make out all the words and graphics. I'm happy to answer any questions. I'm not savvy enough to try hook it up.

Nothing too extreme there. This model is known for its quality and durability, making it a valuable tool testing measurement tasks in various industrial business settings. It comes with cobwebs and leaves dirt rust brittle cords that's that.
